Since 1994, San Francisco resident John Eichenseer, better known as Jhno, has functioned as a DJ, producer, music-software developer, and wide-ranging collaborator. A pianist by training who studied jazz, classical, and ethnic traditions, he earned recognition for weaving those influences organically into electronic contexts while also creating new music tools. His earliest recordings appeared on the Delicate Ear imprint he launched in 1995, which issued his debut trio of albums: Understand, KWNO, and Membrane. NEWdOG, an independent San Francisco label, subsequently reissued KWNO and put out a joint project pairing Jhno with Chicago guitarist John Ridenour. Performing together as Spool, the pair joined the Ambient Brunch tour across the West Coast in 1999. Beyond those continued partnerships with Ridenour, Jhno’s software work brought him into contact with Laurie Anderson and Thomas Dolby. His command of synthesized and processed sound underpins his solo output, which fuses jazz and global elements while dissolving lines separating electronic sub-genres. Releases have also surfaced on Ninja Tune, Instinct Records, and Ultraviolet Records; he has completed multiple remixes and joined Minty Fresh act the Aluminum Group for their second album, Plano. Still based in San Francisco, he continues refining audio software, appears as both DJ and jazz pianist, and plays with the jazz-electronic ensemble Wavelord, which he co-founded.
