Biography
Established in 1972 by participants from a Sufi theater ensemble, Jil Jilala constructs its material around the ritual spoken poetry of the Jilala Brotherhood. The group has simultaneously pursued other devotional and localized musical traditions, with Gnaoua receiving particular attention. A clear commercial breakthrough arrived with the track “Chamar” (The Candle), which evokes a nocturnal meditation on the depths of life, the universe, and everything.
