Although the name Jim and the French Vanilla suggests a group, the project functions as Jim Blaha's one-man recording outlet. Blaha plays guitar in the Minneapolis indie rock band the Blind Shake. During downtime he composed and tracked acoustic pop numbers marked by sharp-angled melodies, sporadic audio effects, and sparse percussion, all documented through his rudimentary home setup. A CD-R containing several of these experiments reached Modern Radio Records, the Minneapolis indie imprint, whose staff responded favorably and convinced Blaha to issue the material officially. The 2008 album Roll Out the Candy, released under the Jim and the French Vanilla name, appeared as a limited CD-R edition on Modern Radio. Four years later Blaha prepared a fresh batch of home recordings; the resulting sophomore effort, titled II, surfaced in both digital format and a limited vinyl pressing, again via Modern Radio. By 2017 Jim and the French Vanilla adopted electric instrumentation for Afraid of the House on Dirtnap Records. Retaining its lo-fi solo character, the album emphasized the gritty roar of electric guitars and aligned more closely with Blaha's Blind Shake contributions, yet retained a distinct melodic perspective.
