Originally from Philadelphia, Jim Beard moved to New York in 1985 with the goal of establishing himself as a pianist. Demand for his skills as a composer soon arose, prompting him to develop both sides of his practice in tandem. Worldwide tours ensued with John McLaughlin during 1986, Wayne Shorter across 1986-1987, and Pat Metheny in 1992, while further engagements involved John Scofield as well as Randy and Michael Brecker. Although a jazz-rock label might appear suitable, it understates the strikingly varied character of his output, which incorporated multiple jazz idioms together with Latin, modern pop, rock, funk, and country currents, all sustained by an ever-present spirit of joie de vivre. Much of his discography drew on his own compositions, and his arrangements consistently emphasized the unrestrained pleasure and playful mischief that animated his work. In the early and middle years of the 1990s he maintained ties with Didier Lockwood, Mike Stern, and Chuck Loeb, appearing on the last of these artists’ 1996 album The Music Inside. His production efforts included Bob Berg’s 1991 release Back Roads and Stern’s 1994 album Is What It Is, both of which received Grammy nominations. Alongside piano, synthesizers played a substantial role in his performances, and he maintained a personal collection of vintage models as a hobby. Beard died on March 2, 2024, at the age of 63.
