Biography
An American standup known for his dry wit, aversion to Hot Pockets, and self-deprecating remarks about his pale complexion, Jim Gaffigan maintains a steady presence on late-night talk shows while also pursuing steady work as an actor and author. His routines draw from everyday observations about meals, idleness, and raising children, all delivered without profanity and earning him a reputation as a clean comic. Active since the early 1990s, he has issued well-received albums including Beyond the Pale in 2006, Mr. Universe in 2012, and Noble Ape in 2018, alongside dozens of film and television credits and several collections of comic essays that together place him among the most commercially successful comedians of the early twenty-first century.
A single Late Show with David Letterman appearance prompted Letterman’s production company, World Wide Pants, to commission a series from Gaffigan; the resulting Welcome to New York failed to continue, yet the exposure led to guest spots on The Ellen Show, Ed, Law and Order, Sex and the City, and That ’70s Show. During the same period he issued four standup CDs on his own imprint and took minor parts in Three Kings, Road Trip, and Igby Goes Down. A 2004 Comedy Central agreement yielded a popular special and his first release for the network, Doin’ My Time, whose Hot Pockets segment soon circulated widely through e-mailed MP3s. He followed with the 2006 CD, DVD, and special Beyond the Pale.
King Baby, released in 2009, examined subjects such as bowling, bacon, and the Waffle House chain. Mr. Universe in 2012 continued the food-themed material with tracks titled “McDonald’s,” “Subway,” and “Domino’s.” Obsessed, from 2014, opened with “Can’t Stop Eating” and featured “Donuts,” “Fried Bread,” and “Kobe Beef.” Cinco arrived in 2017, its title acknowledging Gaffigan’s five children and serving as the audio companion to his fifth cable special. Noble Ape, recorded the next year, adopted a more intimate perspective centered on family health concerns and the chance he might step away from performing. He returned in 2019 with his seventh special, Quality Time.
