Biography
For decades, children and their families have found joy in the banjo-driven sing-alongs, tongue-twisting wordplay, and welcoming dance events created by Jim Gill, a widely recognized children's musician, author, and educator. Oak Park, Illinois, serves as his base, where he earned a graduate degree in child development, with emphasis on the study of play, from the Erikson Institute of Chicago. His distinctive approach to performance, centered on wordplay and movement, took shape during his work with special needs children and an array of therapeutic and family support agencies throughout the Chicago area. Although the Unstoppable String Quartet frequently backs his shows as a compact ensemble, Gill most often journeys across the country accompanied only by his reliable banjo. Dozens of recordings have appeared since his emergence in the early 1990s, among them Jim Gill Sings the Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes, Jim Gill's Irrational Anthem and More Salutes to Nonsense, and Music Play for Folks of All Stripes. A three-volume compilation titled Jim Gill's Most Celebrated Songs arrived in 2019, gathering highlights spanning his entire body of work.
