Biography
Jim Henry's songwriting stands out for its deep connection to the traditions of American roots music. An acoustic guitarist as well as a singer and songwriter, he has collected several contest victories, among them first prize in the songwriting event organized by the Great Woods Folk Festival, plus a nomination at the Boston Music Awards. His expertise on flat-picked guitar has likewise earned him multiple championship titles. Prior to launching a solo career, Henry played with the San Francisco roots-rock band the Sundogs, appearing with them for three straight years at the Newport Folk Festival. He also served as guitarist for the country-folk-rock group the Burns Sisters. Born in Kansas, Henry spent his childhood in Virginia before moving to Massachusetts. His debut solo album, Into the Blue, appeared in 1993 and received strong reviews along with solid rotation on New England stations; he promoted it with regional touring. Two years afterward came Jacksonville. Darlene Wilson, producer for singer-songwriters Bill Morrissey and Patty Larkin, oversaw the sessions, which included guest performances by Jennifer Kimball, Brooks Williams, Duke Levine, and Ellis Paul. Throughout 1996 Henry continued to tour and play while working with Williams on the Signature Sounds release Ring Some Changes, which reached stores the next year.
