Since arriving in the alternative music scene during the mid-1990s, Jim White has pursued an independent artistic route as a vocalist and composer who fuses elements of U.S. musical heritage with an offbeat sense of humor and the narrative tone associated with Southern Gothic writers. His compositions draw from country and gospel foundations yet steer them toward an atmospheric realm, enriching the components through dense arrangements of instruments alongside electronic textures, while the gentle drawl in his delivery lends an apt enigmatic quality to his words. Critical praise and a devoted audience greeted his first full-length release, the 1997 album Wrong-Eyed Jesus! (The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted); inventive studio techniques and several high-profile contributors marked 2004's Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See; 2014's Take It Like a Man emerged as an energetic joint effort with the Packway Handle Band; and 2020's Misfit's Jubilee arrived as an energetic, minimal affair that featured the timely track "The Divided States of America."

Born Michael David Pratt on March 9, 1957, in California, Jim White relocated with his relatives to Pensacola, Florida, at age five and matured within a predominantly Pentecostal setting that exposed him to gospel sounds via broadcast media. At eighteen he suffered a broken leg, and during the period of indoor recovery he instructed himself on guitar. Shortly after acquiring the instrument, an accident with a table saw injured his hand, limiting his technical facility and compelling him toward a more basic playing style. For an extended stretch he maintained a transient lifestyle, taking on assorted temporary roles such as dishwashing, groundskeeping, meal preparation, surfboard lamination, and road paving; he has also stated that he worked as a model and aimed at a professional surfing career.

White spent thirteen years in New York City, earning a living as a taxi driver. He enrolled in film studies at New York University but did not finish the program after entering a prolonged, severe depression. His relatives assisted him in securing a beachfront rental to support his healing, and there he started composing material. He captured a demo version of the song "A Perfect Day to Chase Tornadoes," and the recording reached Luaka Bop Records, the varied imprint operated by David Byrne. The label extended a contract, resulting in the April 1997 release of Wrong-Eyed Jesus! (The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted). The collection earned enthusiastic notices, and for the subsequent effort, 2001's No Such Place, he assembled a stylistically varied project that combined his distinctive Americana approach with contributions from Morcheeba, Sweetback's Andrew Hale, techno DJ and musician Q-Burns Abstract Message, and Yellow Magic Orchestra's Sohichiro Suzuki.

Joe Henry and Tucker Martine handled production duties on 2004's Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See, which featured appearances by Aimee Mann, M. Ward, Bill Frisell, and Barenaked Ladies members. Filmmaker Andrew Douglas helmed the 2003 documentary Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus about White, and Luaka Bop issued a corresponding soundtrack album in 2005 containing performances by White along with the Handsome Family, 16 Horsepower, David Johansen, Cat Power, and Johnny Dowd. Dowd further joined White and Willie B in the side project Hellwood, which delivered the album Chainsaw of Life in 2006. Joe Pernice and Mike Deming collaborated with White on the 2007 release Transnormal Skiperoo. That same year White contributed the essay "Superwhite!" recounting his work with David Byrne to a volume issued alongside an exhibition of his visual art at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin, Ireland.

After parting ways with Luaka Bop, White signed with Yep Roc Records for the 2012 album Where It Hits You, tracked alongside his touring musicians. In 2014 the Athens, Georgia roots ensemble the Packway Handle Band enlisted him to oversee a project, which expanded into the joint 2015 release Take It Like a Man. The independent PIAPTK label issued his following collection, the 2017 set Waffles, Triangles & Jesus. 2020's Misfit's Jubilee presented a comparatively relaxed and buoyant collection from White, though it concluded with the surreal yet timely piece "The Divided States of America."
