Singer and keyboardist Jimbo Jones ranks as a storied rock figure whose Gulf Coast origins lie in the stretch nicknamed the "redneck Riviera." Before Tommy Shaw entered the ranks of Styx, Jones collaborated with the future member of that hit-making rock outfit. Shaw enlisted him to supply background vocals on the 1984 solo release Girls With Guns, whose menacing title matched its content. That album remains among the scant widely available documents of Jones performing, a regrettable scarcity given his standing among musicians from the same regional circle.

An old colleague has taken steps to expand the surviving record, or, given the coastal setting, perhaps the phrase should be “shrimp up” the documentation instead. Producer and keyboardist Eddie Wohlford, whose own ties trace to the Pensacola, Florida rock scene of the early ’70s, has issued a run of archival CDs that feature Jones in a central role. For Years offers the clearest entry point, a selection of standout Jones performances assembled under Wohlford’s production oversight. Numerous additional live and studio tracks document the same circle of players working through an alphabetical run of group names beginning with H, among them Harmony, Harvest, and the Hawg Band.
