Lane came into the world on 4 July 1965 in Chicago, Illinois. A musical upbringing placed his earliest guidance under his father, guitarist and singer Jimmy Rogers, whose circle of friends—Howlin’ Wolf, Albert King, Willie Mabon, Little Walter and Muddy Waters—soon became figures Lane knew and respected. He first handled his father’s guitar at age eight, yet stepped away from music long enough to serve in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army. Back in Chicago by 1983, he resumed playing, refining his technique while working days in construction. In 1987 he entered his father’s band on lead guitar and simultaneously fronted his own unit, the Hurricanes, later renamed Blue Train Running. Early in the 1990s he took the group to Europe, where they appeared on UK television; he also recorded with his father’s ensemble, demonstrating equal assurance as sideman and bandleader. Although his sound tilts toward contemporary rock, the blues remains audible throughout his recordings.

The roster of musicians with whom Lane has collaborated and sometimes recorded underscores this blend of influences: his father, Eric Clapton, David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, Lowell Fulson, Mick Jagger, B.B. King, Sam Lay, Taj Mahal, Van Morrison, Jimmie Lee Robinson, Double Trouble and Hubert Sumlin.
