Biography
Contrabassist and improviser Joëlle Léandre regards John Cage as one of her closest mentors yet has never received due recognition for the volume or caliber of her output since entering the studio in 1981. Over the decades she has collaborated with an array of leading figures in free improvisation, among them German bassist Peter Kowald, American reedsman and composer Anthony Braxton, Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer, Australian violinist Jon Rose, vocalist Lauren Newton, and British guitarist Fred Frith.
A native of Aix-en-Provence, France, Léandre first studied recorder and piano before settling on the double bass. During her training she earned numerous prizes and grants for her exceptional skill and, while on scholarship in Buffalo, NY, encountered composers John Cage, Giacinto Scelsi, and Morton Feldman for the first time. She later committed works by Cage and Scelsi to disc and performed with contemporary ensembles such as 2E2M and l'Ensemble Intercontemporain. Personal acquaintance with Cage proved formative, shaping both her approach to music and her understanding of sound itself. Drawn to free playing within jazz, she absorbed additional inspiration from Derek Bailey, with whom she eventually recorded. Duo sessions with bassist William Parker and trombonist Sebi Tramontana followed, as did membership in the European Women's Improvising Group, the Marilyn Crispell Quartet, the Canvas Trio alongside violinist Carlos Zingaro and clarinetist Rüdiger Carl, and a trio featuring pianist Georg Graewe and clarinetist François Houle. In the 1990s she held residencies in Berlin and Metz, France, while continuing to compose, paint, perform, and teach. Her discography appears on FMP, Intakt, Leo, Hat, and, most extensively, Chris Cutler's Recommended Records, also known as ReR.
