Jodi Phillis entered the world in Melbourne as the child of one American parent and one Australian. She headed back to the United States while still an infant, only to return to Australia once more when it came time to begin her education. At fifteen she left school behind and found herself drawn deeply into both music and graphic design. Employed as a designer by the Australian firm Mambo, she was asked by the Clouds to create artwork for the band, a request that soon brought her into the group as a core member. Between 1989 and 1995 the Clouds issued three albums before disbanding in 1996. That same year Phillis issued her first solo record, Lounge O Sound, which drew critical approval. She next became part of the Dearhunters, a band whose style echoed the approach of Wilco and the Cowboy Junkies, and the group went on to release two albums. Phillis returned with the solo album In Dreams I Live in 2001, earning an ARIA nomination for the project, and the following year she performed across North America.
