Having performed with outfits including The Nightingales and The Prefects, the artist drew divided critical notice in the first years of the 1980s via releases on the then-trendy British indie imprint Cherry Red, among them the track “Compulsion”—distinct from the film of identical title featuring Orson Welles arguing the case of two infamous kidnappers.

Activity on the British music circuit reaches back to the second half of the 1970s, with assorted particulars assembled inside semi-biographical tour diaries that include the line “We got pissed, trashed our equipment and the party ended with five police cars on the doorstep.” The Pillows and Prayers series gathers numerous period performances first issued as 45s or EPs during the format splatter of the 1980s, ideal for those moved by a “Compulsion” to encounter Crow beside contemporaries such as Kevin Coyne, Tracey Thorn, Eyeless in Gaza or The Marine Girls. Singer Martin Gore has recorded a version of “Compulsion.” Crow is periodically cited among the influences on Radiohead.
