Biography
Distinguishing this trumpeter and arranger from the similarly named drummer in the Time calls for noting his dual roles and his particular fascination with Italian repertoire alongside big band traditions. In the 1940s he worked as a jazz sideman with figures that included Buddy Rich, and from 1947 through the close of the decade he performed in the instrumental group the Quintones. Early-1950s stints with the orchestras of Claude Thornhill and Jerry Wald led into an extended stretch of studio work for television, radio, and commercial recordings, among them obbligato passages for crooner Dean Martin and assorted lounge dates.
In 1957 Dolny directed the Joe Dolny Orchestra on an Era label anthology of Italian music standards, a release whose renditions of “Come Back to Sorrento” and “Funiculi Funicula” do not account for the esteem in which jazz arrangers hold him—assuming the Era collection could even be retrieved from a used-record bin. He earned that regard through prolific, inventive charts written for Si Zentner and Ralph Mendez while sustaining his own playing career in later engagements with Harry James, Ray Anthony, and additional leaders. His personal large ensemble functioned chiefly as a rehearsal band yet earned recognition as one of the strongest ensembles of its kind on the West Coast throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
