Biography
Joe Parillo grew up in Rhode Island, where his lyrical and deeply expressive piano work has kept him active as both a performer and educator throughout New England, though wider national recognition has remained limited. His 1990s releases on the Neoga label reflect the introspective, melodic approach associated with Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans at their most contemplative. A classically trained artist who lists Jarrett, Evans, and Oscar Peterson among his primary influences, Parillo immersed himself in both jazz and classical studies during his formative years and later took lessons from several leading jazz figures, among them Marian McPartland in 1978 and Pat Metheny along with Dave Holland in 1980. Between 1977 and 1983 he served as pianist in Telos 3, the swing ensemble directed by trumpeter and vibist Dr. Arthur Motycka, whose résumé included work with Benny Goodman and Doc Severinsen. In 1984 he joined the Glenn Miller “ghost orchestra” for engagements in Hawaii and New Zealand. Parillo’s debut album under his own name, Songbook, appeared in 1983; subsequent leader dates include Clouds (1988), Almost Carefree (1994), Block Island Summer (1996), and the reflective trio session Morning in the Garden (1997). Since 1985 he has directed his own ensemble, the Joe Parillo Ensemble.
