Biography
Watkins earned his chief recognition through his longstanding association with the early jazz clarinetist George Lewis, another native of New Orleans. He also performed with Kid Howard, Isaiah Morgan, Herb Morand, and Punch Miller. As a child he studied piano before taking up drums in his late teens. His work with Lewis began in 1946 and extended through performances and recordings into the 1960s. While a member of Lewis’s group, Watkins accompanied the blues and vaudeville singer Lizzie Miles on live recordings made in the mid-1950s. After 1966, poor health restricted his further musical activity.
