Joemca, whose name is rendered roughly as "JUM-ka," presents himself as a singer-songwriter with formal studies in piano and violin. His listed accomplishments encompass a contemporary reworking of music for a Chinese opera, chamber works drawing on stories by Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, and a puppet production adapted from Nicolai Gogol’s tale The Nose—unless that last item actually belongs to John Cusack’s character in Being John Malkovich. Leading the atmospheric art-pop quartet Joemca & Poets, he favors a rhythm-heavy variant of late-period Radiohead in which the vocal approaches of Rufus Wainwright and Björk appear locked in competition for prominence.

Born in Los Angeles in 1982 and now based in New York City, he divides his time between engagements with several local theater organizations and performances with the group. Joemca & Poets comprises Joemca on vocals and guitar, Jess Luck on keyboards and harmony vocals, Tucker Yaro on bass, and Alec Menge on drums. The band’s self-titled debut EP, which carries a subtitle clarifying the pronunciation of its leader’s stage name, was issued in late 2006 on One Stone Records.
