Listen on Coda
At a remarkably tender age, Dutch composer Johan Jelle Solco Bakker launched his piano studies. Within less than twelve months, his attention turned instead to the clarinet. During his early teens he gravitated once more toward the piano, developing most of his command through repeated listening and hands-on practice. A single year of that period, however, was spent under Frits Jellema, the renowned Dutch concert pianist, who conveyed core techniques and foundational skills to the young musician.

Bakker finished recording his first album, Het Verlangen, in 1995. The solo project presents piano instrumentals including “Rhythm of the Water,” “Desire,” “Love and Sorrow,” and “Rummage Day.” Five years elapsed before the appearance of his second album, Whisperkiss. Reviewers have characterized the recording as simultaneously moody and charming. Among its noteworthy pieces are “Little Dance,” “Gentle Melody,” and “Tolerance and Emotion,” selections that continue to engage both longtime listeners and those newly acquainted with Bakker’s work.
