Biography
As the offspring of Johann Bernhard Bach, Johann Ernst Bach received instruction from Johann Sebastian Bach. Initially serving as his father’s assistant, he took over the position upon the elder Bach’s retirement in 1749. Contemporaries acknowledged his exceptional musical skill and erudition. Although he did not pursue composition as a primary occupation, his pieces reveal a sharp sensitivity to stylistic developments then underway. These works stand out for their concentrated emotional force and inventive character.
