Biography
Hailing from Bohemia, the violinist, conductor, and composer assumed the post of Director of Instrumental Music at the Mannheim court in 1750. Under his leadership the ensemble earned acclaim across Europe and supplied the prototype for the orchestra that would later define the classical era. Among his chief compositions stand his 56 surviving symphonies.
