Biography
John Arnold, a multi-instrumentalist and broken beat producer, entered Detroit’s electronic music world along an unconventional route that diverged from standard local lore. Following formal studies in music theory at Wayne State University, he established the acoustic duo Blackman & Arnold, whose worldbeat leanings drew steady local notice through an unrelenting series of live appearances. Arnold also co-founded the acid jazz ensemble Jazzhead, whose club performances throughout the city’s electronic venues built a dedicated audience. Word-of-mouth circulation of those activities eventually reached techno figures Derrick May and Carl Craig. Impressed by what he heard, Craig arranged for Arnold to appear live at the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000, while May issued the producer’s debut solo recording, Universal Mind, that same year on Fragile, the sister label of Transmat. Four years afterward came a release directly on Transmat, yet Arnold simultaneously attracted the interest of the California label Ubiquity. After several singles and remixes, Ubiquity issued his first album, Neighborhood Science, in 2004, enlisting contributions from Ayro, Malik Alston, and Amp Fiddler. The follow-up, Style and Pattern, arrived in November 2005 on the same imprint and again showcased Detroit notables including jazz legend Wendell Harrison, Parliament/Funkadelic percussionist Larry Fratangelo, and Mahogani Music producer and bassist Paul Randolph.
