John Burgess ranks among the foremost exponents of Scottish highland bagpipe music, whether rendering marches, airs, jigs, strathspeys, or delivering extended pibroch selections. Although born in Aberdeen, he grew up in Edinburgh. At four he first took up the instrument when his father fashioned a miniature practice chanter scaled to his size. Over the following twelve years he progressed through successively larger pipes while receiving instruction from both his father and Pipe Major Ross. He turned professional at sixteen and achieved immediate prominence, capturing gold medals in piobaireachd at his debut appearances in the Argyllshire Gathering at Oban and the Northern Meeting at Inverness. He later served in the Cameron Highlanders and held a post with the Edinburgh City Police before taking a piping instructor position at the Territorial Army facility in Inverness.

Over time he produced multiple enduring recordings, most notably a pair of volumes issued by the British Topic label. When those volumes appeared together in digital form, listeners quickly acquired the reissue to experience his intricate ornamental fingering rendered with enhanced clarity. Additional performances of high quality, including the live sets captured at the Piping Center, have been released on the specialist Cuillian imprint. Beyond concert and studio work, Burgess has sustained an active role in preserving the tradition through conference presentations and by adjudicating competitions.
