Biography
Established toward the end of the 1980s, 700 Miles sustained an extended run of productivity largely through the compositional abilities of frontman John Carlin. Once he concluded that record-company maneuvering and evolving tastes in music were leaving the group adrift, Carlin dissolved the band and shifted to performing solo acoustic sets. Personal hardships he was navigating at the time supplied considerable impetus for his writing. He installed himself in a painter’s studio in Maine, where he started committing the new songs to tape, an effort that culminated in the appearance of his first solo album, 2001’s Songs From the Black House.
