Biography
John Challenger, an organist who has earned praise for his interpretations on the renowned Father Willis instrument housed in Salisbury Cathedral, holds the post of assistant director of music there. His activities extend to the piano, with extensive recital tours to his credit.
Born in Hereford, England, Challenger gained his initial exposure to performance as a chorister in Hereford Cathedral. During that time, he listened to organ performances by Roy Massey, Peter Dyke, and Geraint Bowen, and commenced his own organ studies on the cathedral's Father Willis organ. Among his instructors were David Briggs, Jeremy Filsell, Mark Williams, and David Sanger.
In 2006, he received an appointment as organ scholar at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Two years later, he achieved Fellowship status with the Royal College of Organists. Also in 2008, Challenger took up an organ scholarship at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he directed the St. John's Singers, a mixed-voice student ensemble. He then acted as assistant organist at St. John's College Chapel during 2011 and 2012.
Assuming his ongoing role as assistant director of music at Salisbury Cathedral in 2012, Challenger briefly returned to St. John's College in 2017 to serve as director of music during Andrew Nethsingha's sabbatical, including leadership of the chapel choir for a live BBC Radio 3 broadcast on Ash Wednesday. He maintains an active presence as a piano accompanist and recitalist, in addition to continuo duties on the harpsichord, with appearances throughout Europe and at prominent UK festivals such as the Three Choirs Festival and Windsor Festival.
His discography includes several releases on various labels. The first, Great Hymns from Salisbury, appeared in 2014 via Priory. This was followed in 2015 by Elgar from Salisbury on Regent, a collection of organ transcriptions that garnered critical praise. In 2018 came Organ Prom, documenting the period when Salisbury's Father Willis organ was taken out of service for restoration. Then, in 2021, Salisbury Meditation was issued to celebrate both the instrument's reinstatement and the cathedral's role as a coronavirus vaccination center.
