John Coinman, a singer and songwriter based in Tucson, crafts music that embodies the core character of the Southwest. His approach to folk and country rock, captured across the ten songs on his album The Man Called Someone, conjures images of vast empty landscapes, eerie summer evenings, and isolated individuals. Tony Gilkyson, who previously played guitar in the grunge and punk outfit X, handled production duties on the 1997 release.

A longstanding connection links Coinman to actor Kevin Costner. In 1990 the musician served as music supervisor on the western film Dances With Wolves. Costner later appeared as a guest vocalist on Coinman’s Roving Boy album. The pair also share a writing credit on “The Great Divide,” one of the tracks featured on The Man Called Someone. For the 1997 film The Postman, which Costner both starred in and directed, Coinman supplied multiple songs and took on an acting part.

Beyond his own recordings and projects with Costner, Coinman writes material for fellow performers. He supplied four tracks for an album by country artist James Intveld. He has also delivered live renditions of his songs during spoken word events, including programs dedicated to Dances With Wolves screenwriter Michael Blake and former Doors drummer John Densmore.
