John Davis earned his primary recognition through his collaboration with Lou Barlow in the Folk Implosion, yet the Massachusetts-born singer and songwriter also carved out a notable career as an independent lo-fi artist and once played in the Palace Brothers. He first picked up the guitar at age twelve and, after encountering Sebadoh’s Weed Forestin’, started assembling his own acoustic home recordings in 1988. Those early tapes reached both Barlow and Shrimper founder Dennis Callaci, who issued Davis’s debut cassette, Stars & Songs, in 1993. That year Davis and Barlow formed the Folk Implosion, which delivered Take a Look Inside the Folk Implosion on the Communion label in 1994. Around the same period Davis issued his debut full-length solo album, Pure Night; Leave Home arrived the following year. Blue Mountains appeared in 1997, and I’ll Burn came out in the spring of 2000.
