Biography
Folk artist John Gracie has cultivated a loyal audience and widespread praise throughout his Canadian homeland thanks to his relaxed delivery and thoughtful songwriting. He entered the world in a mining household in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, where the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean later shaped his compositions, yet it was his mother who recognized his vocal talent at five years old and arranged formal singing instruction. During his teenage years Gracie started composing original material, taking cues from fellow Canadian Gordon Lightfoot while absorbing the spirit of the 1960s folk revival. At Mount Allison University he began performing regularly on the folk circuit, and after completing his studies he set out as a full-time touring musician. His debut album appeared in 1988, after which the Juno-nominated artist maintained a consistent output that attracted growing listeners, even venturing successfully into country territory, and secured multiple independent artist honors. Among those recordings are a 1995 tribute to Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan, a Christmas album, and the late-2000 live collection John Gracie Live! Off the Floor But Close to the Ground, which surveys his career in performance.
