Biography
Since 1992, keyboardist John Hermann has been jamming with Southern rock band Widespread Panic, a group whose dedicated fanbase supplies its main momentum even though it has never matched the mainstream reach of the Dave Matthews Band. Hermann and his bandmates maintain a reputation as relentless road warriors, granting him little chance to revisit the blues rock he set aside in his Oxford, MS hometown. After taking up residence there in 1987, he began sitting in with area players at coffee shops and clubs across the deep South upon returning from the road. In fall 2000 he joined forces with North Mississippi All-Stars members Luther and Cody Dickinson plus Paul "Crumpy" Edwards of Bloodkin to record a solo album. Epitaph issued the resulting country-rock project, Smiling Assassin, in early 2001.
