Biography
John Loder, a producer and engineer, established the influential Southern Studios along with its related record label and distribution network, which played significant roles in the rise and endurance of post-punk music. He entered the world on April 7, 1946, in the vicinity of Plymouth, England. He pursued a brief course in electrical engineering at London's City University, though his true passion lay in music, focusing particularly on experimental and avant-garde works. His involvement with the avant-garde group Exit commenced in 1970. By 1972, using funds accumulated during a brief period as a taxi driver, Loder had put together his own multi-track recording setup. Two years afterward, he launched a studio within the garage of his North London residence. Throughout the middle years of the 1970s, he composed and produced advertising jingles. His path intersected in 1977 with Penny Rimbaud, another former member of Exit, who had meanwhile helped establish the punk band Crass. Loder soon took on roles as the group's recording engineer and financial adviser, and following minor enhancements, the garage space was formally launched as Southern Studios. Together with Rimbaud, he launched Crass Records, where the strong commitment to D.I.Y. principles—no formal agreements or documents, relying instead on handshake agreements and shared confidence—garnered substantial admiration among punk musicians and enthusiasts. In subsequent years, Loder developed multiple other labels as well as Southern Distribution, providing a base and distribution options for deserving acts that could easily have been overlooked. His work as a producer and manager eventually encompassed an array of underground artists such as Björk, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Fugazi, Shellac, and Slint. Even as the broader music business moved toward greater consolidation, the Southern organization stayed true to its independent spirit, matching that of Loder himself. Loder passed away on August 12, 2005, at 59 years old, following a fight against a brain tumor.
