Biography
Distinguished by the nickname Big John McAfee to differentiate him from both the historically significant Irish fiddler of the same name and the computer-virus eradicator who shared it, this Austin-rooted blues performer draws deep inspiration from Johnny Winter, widely known as the albino wonder. Analyses of Winter’s musical impact frequently identify Big John as the guitarist most shaped by that influence anywhere, with his singing reflecting it to an even greater degree. Although Back in Beaumont offered the opportunity to work alongside his idol, McAfee’s role on the project was limited to bass, preventing direct comparisons of their guitar and vocal styles. Labels have shown little interest in committing his material to record, perhaps concluding that a single Johnny Winter already suffices. He maintains a creative partnership with Austin producer David Eaton and contributed to an album by the British band Crackout.
