Biography
John Polito built his name on restoring audio from antique recordings, yet he also nurtured a private drive to establish himself as a performer. Signs of his musical gift appeared early, as he selected melodies on a compact electric organ at age four and began piano instruction at twelve. Throughout secondary school and university, he performed in groups devoted to progressive rock acts including Yes and Genesis. At the same time he pursued music as a physical science, earning first place in a high-school science fair for a project on sound waves before enrolling at Stanford University to study engineering. Mentorship from John Cowning, a pioneer of synthesized music, led him to switch majors, and he graduated with a B.A. in music, receiving honors in composition and digital signal processing. Sonic Solutions hired him immediately as one of its original staff members; the company’s “NoNoise” system restored clarity to vintage tapes and discs and became an industry benchmark. Polito later established his own company, Audio Mechanics, while still performing regularly at Los Angeles clubs and producing demo recordings for emerging artists. His debut album, Crossing the Line, appeared in April 2001.
