Biography
Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1946, stride and swing pianist John Sheridan discovered jazz at eight years old upon first encountering a recording of Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. Professional piano engagements already occupied his time once he reached thirteen. After high school he studied at Capital University in Columbus, where he completed a bachelor's degree in piano, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1968 and performing with the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C., until his release from service in 1972. He then entered North Texas State University, earning a master's degree in music upon graduation in 1977. In 1979 Sheridan became a member of Jim Cullum's Jazz Band and stayed until 2002, at which point he began working independently. Throughout his career he has collaborated with Scott Hamilton, Wycliffe Gordon, Jake Hanna, Ralph Sutton, Yank Lawson, Dick Hyman, and numerous additional artists. All of his recordings have appeared on Arbors Records, the label owned and operated by Rachel and Mat Domber, including Something Tells Me (1997), Dream Band, Make Me Dream Some More (1999), They Can't Take That Away from Me (1999), Get Rhythm in Your Feet (2002), Artistry 3 (2004), and Easy as It Gets (2005).
