Over the last three decades, John Snyder has ranked among the leading figures in jazz record production, managing on multiple occasions to document substantial bodies of music that fall outside mainstream commercial expectations. Early in the 1970s he held a position at CTI, where he oversaw notable sessions featuring Jim Hall and Paul Desmond. During the mid-1970s he launched the Horizon imprint under A&M, assembling a roster that encompassed Hall, Desmond, Ornette Coleman, Dave Brubeck, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and Charlie Haden. After that venture concluded, Snyder continued working with many of the same artists on his own Artists House label between 1977 and 1979, a concern distinguished by its high-quality LP presentation and musical standards. In the years since, he has operated as a key behind-the-scenes figure, overseeing the preservation of numerous significant recording sessions.
