This English organist channeled the greater share of his output into sacred vocal works that revealed both his technical command and a flair for writing melodies with wide appeal. Enduring favor greeted "Ascribe unto the Lord" and "Keep, we beseech Thee" in his own day and long afterward, since both pieces were repeatedly copied and featured in multiple anthologies. Travers probably trained with Maurice Greene, sang as a chorister at St. George's, took part in the affairs of the Academy of Ancient music, and held the post of organist at St. John's of Covent Gardens and Fulham Parish church. He also served as organist of the Chapel Royal and maintained a friendship with Pepusch.
