Biography
John Waters, long celebrated as the filmmaker behind such cult landmarks as Pink Flamingos, Polyester, and Hairspray, shifted focus in the 2000s to curating seasonal music anthologies that matched the exaggerated, off-kilter sensibility of his films. The resulting projects, among them 2004's A John Waters Christmas and 2007's A Date with John Waters, drew on the same assortment of novelty numbers, cuts by little-known acts, and '50s and '60s standards that had defined his movie soundtracks, underscoring once more how the "Pope of Trash" possesses a sharp instinct for the choicest strains of questionable taste.
