Formed in the early 90s, the US alternative rock trio Johnboy brought together Barry Stone on guitar and vocals, Tony Bice on bass and vocals, and Jason Meade on drums. Their uncompromising, angular rock ‘n’ roll quickly found an audience drawn to its raw edge. Hate and loathing defined the core of their 1993 debut Pistolswing, released on Trance Syndicate Records, where an instinctive rejection of conventional rock sounds shaped the sessions and drew notice from Steve Albini and Bob Mould. After catching the band live, Albini engineered the follow-up Claim Dedications in 1994, while Mould secured them an opening slot on Sugar’s 1993 US tour. Outlets such as Magnet singled out Johnboy as one of the most exciting acts to emerge in the mid-90s.
