Johnny "Dumplin" Cox serves as steel guitarist for the Time Jumpers, the Nashville Western swing ensemble, while also directing the house band at Nashville Nightlife Theater and making occasional appearances with Connie Smith. A West Virginia native, he first picked up the guitar at age seven. Three years afterward, his father, pianist Bobby Cox, relocated the household to Nashville to advance his own performing ambitions.

Cox soon developed a fascination with the steel guitar, acquiring a non-pedal model as a Christmas gift in 1968. Within months his mother bought him a Sho-Bud equipped with pedals and a double neck. At twelve he began sitting in with his father’s band, and three years later he joined Lonzo & Oscar on the road. Del Reeves quickly became another regular employer. Over the years Cox has recorded and performed with Mel Tillis, Charlie Louvin, Jimmy C. Newman, Ernest Tubb, Bonnie Raitt, Jim Ed Brown, Cal Smith, Mandy Barnett, Billy Walker, Roy Drusky, and Justin Tubb.
