Biography
Originating from a 1966 birth in New York City, Jonathan Tiersten launched his professional path through cinema. He appeared in the cult horror classic Sleepaway Camp before enrolling in drama studies at the University of New York alongside Adam Sandler and Molly Shannon. By 1987 he had taken a part in the after-school production "Seasonal Differences," yet growing disillusionment with acting prompted him to abandon the industry entirely. Relocating from New York City to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1991, Tiersten purchased and ran the Mountain Tap Tavern, the venue that hosted David Gray’s first North American performance. Guitar lessons soon followed, leading him to front his own ensemble. In 1998 he issued his debut album, Heaven, through Hapi Skratch Records; the release achieved regional success and earned extensive radio exposure. He next assembled the short-lived underground rock outfit Gafiltaphunk. Following its dissolution, Tiersten concentrated on the folk-rock-blues collective Bambi’s Apartment, which delivered its first album, Who’s Bambi?, in 1999. The group toured extensively across Colorado and the Pacific Coast and issued two EPs in quick succession. After the 2001 live recording BA2K Live EP appeared, Bambi’s Apartment dissolved. Tiersten subsequently formed Ten Tiers, whose sound recalled the work of David Bowie, Neil Young, Counting Crows, and Radiohead.
