Biography
Emerging from Miami’s vibrant network of dance-music creators, Jonny from Space has established himself as a compelling presence in the city’s club environment. His productions, layered with psychedelic electronics and polyrhythmic ambience, first brought attention through the 2020 EP R.E.M. and the later full-length Back Then I Didn't But Now I Do.
Jonathan Trujilo was born and raised in East Harlem by Colombian immigrant parents. Early listening centered on bachata and merengue until a half-sister broadened his tastes with material from System of a Down through Deftones. The family’s relocation to Miami during his teenage years immersed him in local traditions that stretched from Miami bass to the Ultra Music Festival.
Already frequenting clubs as a teenager, Trujillo left college and began securing regular performances at Club Space, co-owned by Ill Points Festival founder David Sinopoli. Refining his approach on the venue’s Space Tapes label led to his adopted stage name and a series of electronic releases. These began with the ambient-focused R.E.M. in 2020 and the drum’n’bass single “Euphorique,” followed by the 2022 EPs Tide, Spiral, and No Swim Advisory plus 2023’s Heat Wave. Parallel work included promotions and collaborations with other Miami-based artists such as Nick León and Danny Daze. The summer of 2024 brought his most visible project to date, the introspective album Back Then I Didn't But Now I Do, issued on the Incienso label.
