Jorma Kaukonen

A Grammy-winning American guitarist and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Jorma Kaukonen earned lasting recognition as a founding member of the psychedelic rock legends Jefferson Airplane as well as the cult blues-rockers Hot Tuna. His fingerstyle technique, grounded in blues, folk, and Americana traditions, established him as an influential player and sought-after teacher who runs his own guitar camp. Beyond his contributions to Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, Kaukonen has proven a steady collaborator and solo performer, issuing recordings at a consistent rate since the late 1970s such as River of Time (2009), Ain't in No Hurry (2015), and The River Flows (2021).

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Kaukonen first picked up the guitar in that city. During the early 1960s he settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he accompanied singer Janis Joplin at neighborhood venues. He joined Jefferson Airplane as a founding member in 1965, and the group reached widespread acclaim two years later. Although his compositions and singing received limited spotlight within the band, his singular guitar work proved essential to its signature sound.

In 1970 he launched the spinoff duo Hot Tuna alongside bassist Jack Casady, a project that became his main outlet once Jefferson Airplane disbanded in 1973. Hot Tuna issued multiple albums featuring Kaukonen on vocals and guitar through 1978. Afterward he pursued solo work and appeared with outfits including Vital Parts (1980). He rejoined Casady in Hot Tuna during the 1980s, and both musicians took part in Jefferson Airplane’s 1989 reunion; a Hot Tuna reunion album followed the next year. Kaukonen stayed busy into the century’s turn, maintaining a schedule of tours and recordings in varied lineups until he settled with Red House Records, which issued well-received titles including Stars in My Crown (2007), River of Time (2009), Ain't in No Hurry (2015), and The River Flows (2021).
