The American rapper and singer Joseph Black first reached listeners in 2020 through his debut single, the emotionally charged blend of hip-hop and pop titled "(I hope you) miss me," which preceded the arrival of his first full-length project, the 2021 album Untold Stories: Love & Addiction.

Born in Minnesota, Black experienced an unsettled childhood that began in the countryside before he relocated to Duluth alongside his mother at an early age. Identifying himself as a former juvenile delinquent, he discovered comfort in sound thanks to his older brother and developed a particular affinity for rap through the work of Eminem and Lil Wayne. Following his departure from high school, he engaged in street-level activity while still chasing a recording path, yet relocating to Los Angeles finally allowed him to devote himself entirely to music. There he released "(I hope you) miss me" in 2020, a track that quickly accumulated millions of streams. He then assembled additional songs that confronted his early years, romantic entanglements, substance issues, and recovery, ultimately unveiling Untold Stories: Love & Addiction toward the end of 2021.
