Since 1980 Joseph Hammer has performed on analog synthesizers and samplers while shaping tape loops, appearing in Dinosaurs With Horns (launched in 1982), Steaming Coils and Debt of Nature, every one of those ensembles formed alongside Rick Potts, and also in Points Of Friction, Blue Daisies and additional projects. He has worked in tandem with the eclectic songster Eugene Chadbourne and with Otomo Yoshihide, one of Japan's premiere sound experimenters. Hammer's unconventional 'homegrown' approach draws on audio CD sources that he abstracts manually through vintage magnetic tape equipment, resulting in a live "phonomontage." His chief musical influences remain the experience of tuning in more than one AM radio station simultaneously and a particular installment of the '70s T.V. show Land of the Giants in which astronauts foil alien tyrants through the deployment of tape loops.
