Although his recognition has stayed mostly within Africa, Joseph Kamaru has shaped Kenya’s music landscape ever since 1967. Early successes such as “Celine,” “Thina Wa Kamaru,” and “Tugatigitihanio” took the form of rhythmic dance numbers cut with his sister Catherine Muthoni, while his live shows were presented as “x rated, adult only” spectacles. After converting to born-again Christianity in 1993, Kamaru altered his artistic path completely. He dissolved the ensemble Kamaru Supersounds, launched gospel music activities, and dedicated his singing exclusively to the Lord. By staging highly-spiritual concerts and curating festivals, Kamaru has elevated gospel to one of the most prominent sounds heard throughout Kenya today.
