Having put out numerous self-produced tapes during his initial phase, Joseph Mulhollen achieved national visibility only in 2002 with the arrival of Polar. Raised on a farm in western New York, he developed an early facility with guitar and music theory. His output consisted of deliberate, introspective acoustic pieces shaped by evocative melodies and economical technique, allowing stylistic shifts while retaining a singular character. He began capturing material on a secondhand 4-track machine, freely distributing the results as presents or during performances. Once enrolled in college he took part in open mic nights and supplied one song to a regional anthology. His debut studio session rekindled an enthusiasm for recording, leading him to focus on material for a solo album. After spending a year and a half laying down more than thirty songs, he chose thirteen favorites and issued Polar in 2002.
