With a resonant baritone and formal operatic training, singer-songwriter Joshua Payne arrived in the pop arena equipped with an uncommon background. Born nearly without hearing, he underwent surgery as a toddler that restored the majority of his auditory ability, after which music played a central role in acclimating him to an audible environment. His first years unfolded in the Dallas/Ft. Worth region before his family relocated to rural Arkansas when he turned eight. Both parents possessed deep musical ties—his mother as a classical vocalist and his father as a preacher and choir director—so the household rang with sounds ranging from James Taylor to Prokofiev, yet the young Payne gravitated toward athletics even as his powerful singing voice drew notice. After finishing high school in 1991, he accepted a football scholarship to Ouachita College, only to suffer a severe knee injury that redirected his energies toward music; he began formal voice study and soon captured victories in opera competitions. He then entered the Master of Fine Arts vocal program at the University of Memphis and performed with Opera Memphis, earning several leading roles thanks to the strength of his baritone.

Upon completing his degree, Payne settled in Nashville. There, in 2002, pianist Jim Brickman caught his performance and promptly invited him to join a package tour. Once the tour concluded, Payne met producer Michael Omartian, who was struck by the Arkansas native’s commanding baritone and collection of original material. The pair recorded a demo that eventually reached Ron Goldstein at Verve Music Group, resulting in a recording contract. Omartian produced Payne’s debut Verve album, Your Love, My Home, issued in 2004. Two years later came the independent release Same Shoes Second Verse.
