Joydrop delivers potent vocals, edgy guitars and a hard-driving rhythm section as its defining rock identity. Their debut album Metasexual draws on rock’s enduring essence through sturdy songwriting, clear melodies and lasting hooks while incorporating present-day elements such as samples, modified drum tones and loops. The group originated in Toronto in 1996, and its music mirrors the contrasting histories of the members. Vocalist Tara Slone devoted more than ten years to opera and theater training. Guitarist Thomas Payne, who pursued musical composition and philosophy, passed his teenage years working with a 4-track recorder. Bassist Tom McKay acquired his background in the UK through performances and songwriting alongside multiple artists. Drummer Tony Rabalao focused on composition and jazz while appearing across numerous musical settings. For the album the band enlisted longtime producer and mixer Ron St. Germain (Creed, 311, Soundgarden, Tool, Bad Brains). Spiders arrived four years after the band’s formation, and 2001’s Viberate showcased frontwoman Tara Sloane’s strongest performances to date.
