Biography
During the 1990s Juan Acuña served as frontman for the three-time Grammy Award nominees Los Terribles del Norte. At the start of the following decade he departed to launch his own norteño outfit, Juan Acuña y el Terror del Norte. Renowned for corridos and cumbias, Los Terribles del Norte issued numerous Freddie Records albums across that decade, among them three Grammy-nominated titles: El Bronco (1993), Colgado de un Arbol (1998), and Décimo Aniversario (1999). After El Ultimo Paso (2000), Acuña (vocals, bajo sexto) parted ways with Francisco Mendez (vocals, electric bass), Benny Mendez (accordion), and Jesse Tavar (drums). While Los Terribles del Norte carried on under a replacement singer, Acuña assembled Juan Acuña y el Terror del Norte with Pablo Villaneuva (accordion), Rafael Dorantes (bass), and Raul Baez (percussion). The new band’s first full-length release, Juan Acuña y el Terror del Norte, appeared in 2002; its follow-up, Pa' Toda Mi Raza...Eso! (2003), earned a Latin Grammy nomination. The next four albums—De Herencia Picuda (2004), Corridos Perrones (2005), No Se Que Traigo en los Ojos (2006), and No Me Rajo (2008)—were issued on Univision Records. Me Siento Picudo (2009) and Corridos de Puro Pico...Eso! (2011) signaled a return to Freddie Records.
