The sonic identity of Jubilee reflects an intersection of Love and Rockets, Nine Inch Nails, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, a resemblance explained by the Los Angeles-based ensemble’s recording sessions with personnel from each act. Co-founders Aaron North and Michael Shuman cultivated an extensive network of alternative-rock associates that made such collaborations possible. North’s prior tenure with Nine Inch Nails complemented Shuman’s membership in Queens of the Stone Age and in Wires on Fire, the latter ensemble having included future Jubilee guitarist Jeff Lynn. Persistent difficulty securing a steady drummer prompted early tracking with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Nick Jago and with Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, who contributed drum-machine parts; the Willowz’s Loren Shane Humphrey subsequently joined as a permanent member before being succeeded by the Icarus Line’s Troy Petrey. Once signed to North’s Buddyhead label, the group embraced the imprint’s experimental approach to digital dissemination, which included a subscription model delivering every Jubilee recording from 2008 onward, commencing with the January release of the “Rebel Hiss” single. The forthcoming debut album was announced as featuring Petrey alongside guest drummers Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age.
