Blending rock, funk, pop, and classical touches into an energetic gospel approach, the Indianapolis collective Randy Weston & Judah Band delivers its distinctive flavor across projects such as the 2018 album Gone Fishin' and the 2022 release Made for This.
G. Randy Weston, a singer, songwriter, and producer who also acts as creative director for Grammy-winning gospel star Vashawn Mitchell, launched the ensemble. Starting in 2014, Weston and the group carried messages of faith and hope across the road, steadily building an enthusiastic audience through high-energy shows and their lively gospel party band aesthetic. They secured a deal with Malaco subsidiary Xist Music for the 2015 debut album The Return of Glory. Two years afterward, they moved to the eOne imprint Light Records and issued the three-song EP For My Good. Another EP, More Than I Ever Expected, surfaced in early 2018, with the full-length Gone Fishin' arriving later that year and debuting at number seven on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart.
Weston sustained the pace via the funky "I Believe" on Judah Band's 2020 album Hush, then issued the bright electro-folk single "Up from Here." The group's third full-length, Made for This, emerged in 2022 and included guest spots from Vashawn Mitchell, Tasha Page-Lockhart, and others.
