Detroit natives Judah Johnson embrace their inherent character as a group, remaining largely unconcerned with the Motor City's most celebrated acts. Their focus rests on creating music that suits their own sensibilities, blending sludgy space rock textures with understated jazz accents to craft an engaging indie rock atmosphere reminiscent of Elliott Smith, Sparklehorse, and Pedro the Lion. The band originated in 1999 when Nate Cavalieri on keyboards, Daniel Johnson handling vocals and guitar, Brian Pierson on guitar, Zach Roberts on bass, and Charlie Koltak on drums united despite disparate origins and varied musical preferences. By summer 2000 they had established a collaboration with songwriter and producer Don Dixon, whose credits include the Smithereens, R.E.M., and the Golden Palominos, enabling Judah Johnson to refine their singular approach ahead of performances across the Midwest. Their self-titled debut EP appeared on Flameshovel Recordings the next spring. Several months afterward Pierson departed to complete his schooling. Cavalieri and Roberts exited in spring 2002 to pursue separate endeavors. Keyboardist Steve Nistor and bass player Rodrigo Palma joined, allowing Judah Johnson to resume studio work that summer; the resulting album Kisses and Interrogation reached listeners in early 2003. Their third release, the more straightforward and assured Be Where I Be, arrived in August 2006.
